Guwahati: On 6 July, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced a new spot fine schedule for Guwahati to strengthen sanitation enforcement and promote a cleaner city.

GMC has introduced new public rules; under the rules, residents may face spot penalties for offenses such as littering, spitting in public places, illegal waste dumping, public urination, open defecation, and the use of banned single-use plastic items. The initiative aims to improve civic discipline and encourage citizens to keep Guwahati clean, healthy, and environmentally friendly.
The new GMC notification lists penalties for 16 different sanitation-related offenses. Below is the complete spot fine schedule for Guwahati:

| Improper disposal of biomedical, e-waste, sanitary or other non-biodegradable waste | 500 |
| Illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste on roads or public places | 2000 |
| Dumping fish, poultry or slaughterhouse waste in open areas | 1000 |
| Disposal of animal excreta in public places or failure to clean it | 500 |
| Dumping waste at parks, tourist spots, scenic locations or by roadside vendors | 500 |
| Damaging or interfering with municipal water supply infrastructure | 500 |
| Damaging or interfering with sewerage infrastructure | 500 |
| Illegal disposal of faecal sludge, septage or other harmful substances | 2000 |
| Disposal of chemical waste within GMC limits | 5000 |
| Dumping waste, littering, burning waste, open defecation, or polluting rivers, drains, wetlands and other water bodies | 1000 |

The highest fine under the new schedule is 25,000 for blocking the natural flow of water in drains by dumping materials. And the lowest fine is 300 for spitting in public places.
