ICMR cancer report highlights high cancer incidence in Kamrup Urban, with the area ranking among India’s highest for male and female cancer incidence.

Guwahati: Kamrup Urban occupies the fourth spot in the national list for male cancer cases and the third spot in the national list for female cancer cases as per the Assam Cancer Burden Profile 2026 from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This reflects the increasing burden of cancer in the Guwahati area and the importance of creating awareness for early detection.
These statistics are a part of the Consolidated Report of Population-Based Cancer Registry (PBCR)—Kamrup and the Assam cancer burden profile through ICMR’s National Institute of Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiology.
The cancer incidence among women in the region, according to the report, was recorded at 174.1 per 100,000 women, making Kamrup Urban third in the nation.
There has been an increase in the incidence of cancer among males and females during the research period. The newly diagnosed cancer among the male population increased from 170.7 to 222.5 per 100,000, while that of women increased from 146.3 to 189.9 per 100,000.
Another issue is the probability of getting cancer before the age of 75. According to data from 2015 to 2019, the probability of developing cancer in the region was 1 in 4 for males and 1 in 5 for females.
Esophageal cancer was responsible for the highest number of cancer deaths among men, accounting for 19.3 percent. For women, cervical cancer represented 19.3 percent of cancer deaths, while breast cancer represented 13.1 percent.
As a further indicator of late diagnosis, it should be noted that nearly 74 percent of oral cancers were diagnosed in the locoregional stages, whereas 50 percent of lung cancers were diagnosed in distant metastatic stages.
The above statistics illustrate the need for awareness about cancer and timely consultations with doctors.
