Guwahati, August 10: Mirabai Chanu’s Glasgow gold in 2026 is a matter of pride for India and the Northeast region, as the weightlifter from Manipur has yet again proved that she can make a mark on the international stage.
Mirabai Chanu claimed the women’s 48kg weightlifting gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. With the help of her feat, she made sure that India’s first gold medal came in the tournament. Chanu lifted a total of 190kg during the tournament, in which she lifted 85kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk. This was her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal after winning them in the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
Mirabai Chanu’s Glasgow Gold triumph was not only about making the medal tally count for the country but was more about a lot of emotions for the Manipuri weightlifter. Following her success, Chanu could not stop herself from getting emotional as she remembered the tough times she had gone through over the past four years.
During that time, she suffered injuries and missed the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she finished fourth in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting category.
It came into the limelight once again after Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the Commonwealth Games medalists of India. While talking to Chanu, Modi talked about her crying after the victory at Glasgow and talked about the challenges which she had to overcome to achieve this victory. Modi also lauded the determination of the Indian athletes.
Chanu’s victory holds a special significance for the state of Manipur and also for the larger Northeast. The weightlifter from Manipur has emerged as one of the most prominent sporting personalities of the Northeast.
