Guwahati Ropeway Project 2026: Assam plans two new routes linking Khanapara, Guwahati Railway Station, and Kamakhya, while the Kamakhya project moves towards tendering.

Guwahati: Two ropeway routes are expected to be installed in Guwahati in the near future because the government of Assam is planning to develop better transportation connections and ease traffic issues within the city. These proposed ropeways will be built from Guwahati Railway Station to Khanapara and Kamakhya Railway Station to Kamakhya Temple.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently shared an update about the ropeway projects on social media, highlighting their role in making daily travel easier for commuters.
As per the proposed project, the Guwahati Railway Station–Khanapara ropeway will span approximately 11 km. Another ropeway of 1.43 km will be built between Kamakhya Railway Station and Kamakhya Temple.
The projects are part of an extensive project to construct five ropeway routes in the state of Assam. On November 3, the Assam Cabinet cleared an agreement with the Central Government for setting up a joint Ropeway Development Authority for the projects.
As per the proposal, the Central Government will get a 51 percent share, while the Assam Government will own a 49 percent share in the projects. The development of these projects would be done through a public-private partnership model.
Kamakhya Ropeway Project on the Path to Tendering
Of the five proposed ropeways, one project is quite advanced. National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) floated a tender on October 21, 2026, to develop, operate, and maintain the 1.43-km ropeway.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 201.52 crore. As per the tender terms and conditions, interested bidders may submit their tenders until December 8, 2026.
With the development of this project, the transport connectivity is expected to improve, along with the tourism prospects of the area along with providing commuters with another mode of travel. However,
