Assam Essential Medicines Ranking places the state 2nd in India for essential medicines access across public healthcare institutions.

Assam has secured the second position in India in access to essential medicines across public healthcare institutions, marking a major achievement for the state’s healthcare system.
Guwahati: Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal announced the achievement on October 6, 2026. According to Singhal, Assam has risen to the All India 2nd position in the Essential Drugs List (EDL) ranking across public healthcare institutions, based on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s DVDMS Central Dashboard.
In the current ranking, Bihar stands first, followed by Assam, with Punjab, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh completing the list, according to the state government’s ranking.
Singhal added that the success of the state is a result of the dedication of Team Swasthyawan Assam, who have worked hard towards making essential drugs available to everyone.
The Chief Minister of the state, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had also responded to this success of the state on October 6. He pointed out that the significance of this ranking is making sure that medicines are accessible when required.
Medicines are an integral part of public healthcare, especially for those individuals who have to rely on government hospitals and health centers for their treatment. Medicines are provided in Assam by means of its public healthcare system under the free drug service scheme of the National Health Mission.
