The Assam Legislative Assembly has passed the Majuli University Bill 2026, transforming it into a multidisciplinary institution offering Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Technology, and other academic disciplines.

Guwahati 27 July: The government of Assam has cleared a major revamp for the Majuli University of Culture, which would pave the way for it to be renamed Majuli University with an inter-disciplinary structure. This development was informed by the Assam Minister of Education, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, who has claimed that this initiative would help the students get better prospects in the field of higher education.
So far, this university has been dedicated to the conservation of the unique culture of Assam. However, through this decision, the students will be able to enroll in various courses such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Technology, etc. within one university. This would benefit not only the students of Majuli district but also those living in the neighboring districts.
It is felt that this process of change will bring out the best in the university and will help the university align itself with the vision of the NEP 2020, which promotes multidisciplinary studies and academic freedom. At the same time, the distinctive culture of Majuli shall not be left behind as far as its significance to the university is concerned.
The move has been received positively, and it marks another positive step towards the improvement of the educational infrastructure in Assam. After being fully developed, Majuli University is poised to become one of the leading universities in Assam, giving students various career choices while at the same time maintaining its cultural importance.
